The meaning of ‘Mukti’ is freedom, emancipation and liberation with an aim of ending all types of inequalities and violence against women, particularly in the Siraha district as well as in Nepal. Mukti Nepal was emerged as an informal network of feminist women in 2010 during the 16 days’ campaign. We realized a formal organization and registered in District Administration Office (DAO), Siraha District in 2011. The organization also affiliated with Social Welfare Council (SWC) of Nepal.
Mukti Nepal is only women leaded organization in Siraha District and largely dedicated to protect and promote the rights of women by empowering them and demanding government’s accountability in addressing women’s issues. The rampant injustice and violence against women in country with higher concentration in Tarai districts of Nepal had propelled the members of Mukti Nepal to unify and combat the problems collectively. The organization is also ideal in terms of women representation where all the founder members are female representing diverse castes and ethnicity. All the board members are actively working as women human rights defenders.
Mukti Nepal is leaded by Ms Shyam Kumari Sah who was awarded by French embassy of Nepal with the human rights award in 2011. As young and energetic woman, She was also nominated for “emerging champion for peace” for the N-Peace Award of the year 2012. She is widely known for her daring steps where she unleashed herself from the child marriage at the age of 13 and determined to uproot the deep rooted in human attitude.
Mukti Nepal works in close coordination, collaboration and networking with community, local government, human right network and women human right defender network as well as different central level alliance to amplify the issues of women and conduct effective advocacy campaign for the women empowerment and their justice. The organization is associated as a member of different networks in the district like; Gender Base Violence (GBV), Committee of Anti-trafficking, Human Rights Defenders (HRD) Network and Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD) Network.
Mukti Nepal can enabled the meaningful participation of women, got success by handling more than 100 cases of related to girls and women, Campaigned for social harmony through taking and eating lunch jointly among the dalit and non-dalit community. Through its campaign, Mukti, Nepal has been able to set an example by drawing the attention of policy makers, law enforcement agencies, political leaders, local government likeminded stakeholders.
